TomTom Touch Cardio fitness tracker

Released late last year, this is TomTom’s first ever fitness tracker. In addition to monitoring your activity, the main novelty here is that it analyzes your body composition. The device can detail your body fat and muscle percentage from the wrist, as well as count the number of calories you burn throughout the day.

Similar to how smart scales work, this is accomplished this by sending a low electrical current through one foot and reading the current with a sensor under the other foot. The current passes through fat more slowly and the scale calculates the amount of resistance to come up with a body fat percentage.

In terms of activity, the fitness tracker captures steps, active time, calories burned, distance walked and sleep time. There is also a heart rate sensor which will monitor your ticker at regular intervals throughout the day.

The wearable features a slim and discreet design. Information can be displayed and swiped through, on a touchscreen, or via the TomTom MySports app. You can also display incoming call and text notifications on your wrist.

TomTom Touch Fitness tracker has a seven day battery life and is rated splash-proof.

Released in February this year, the TomTom Touch is a scaled-down version of the Cardio fitness tracker.

It lacks the fancy body composition functionality but you still get the 24/7 activity tracking functions. This includes counting steps, active time, calories burned, distance walked, and monitoring sleep time. There is also a heart rate sensor which keeps tabs on your ticker at regular intervals throughout the day.

The Dutch company is now trying to make its fitness tracker range more accessible to the masses. In addition to being cheaper, the new device also features a more fashion-friendly design, and will work with the company’s new sports app.

TomTom Spark 3

View technical specs

All of the Spark fitness trackers are on the third-generation of devices. However, the four different models do different things, hence the price difference.

Common to all of them are 24/7 activity tracking functions. So think step counting, distance, calorie burn, automatic sleep tracking and active minutes. They also all feature GPS, Multi Sport modes, Goal Setting and Sports Mode.

It terms of added sensors, the watch now includes a compass in case you get lost when running on a new trail. You can also use the watch to see where the path has taken you, and upload new routes to explore different places.

In terms of design, you get customizable straps, wireless syncing, 5 ATM water resistance and a touchscreen display.

And the above is what you get with the entry level TomTom Spark 3 version. This device excels in ease of use and the metrics that it churns out are excellent. If you are after a no-nonsense featured packed running watch and activity tracker, you won’t go wrong with Spark 3.

TomTom Spark 3 Music + Headphones

This is the next level up. The TomTom Spark 3 Music + Headphones is one of the few GPS running watches that lets you stream music without your phone.

So in addition to all of the above, you get 3GB of onboard storage which is enough for around 500 songs. For many, the combination of GPS and built-in music storage makes all the difference, because it means they can leave their smartphone behind when they go for a run.

This version also comes with Audio Performance Feedback and the The TomTom Sports Bluetooth Headphones. If you prefer, you can connect your TomTom Spark 3 with a wide range of other Bluetooth headphones.

TomTom Spark 3 Cardio

The clue is in the name. This version benefits from 24/7 heart rate tracking. Everything else is exactly the same as the entry level Spark 3 version.

Monitoring your ticker through the day is important. In fact, your resting heart rate is perhaps the best indicator of your overall health and fitness. The other benefit of the Cardio version is that you can heart rate zone train. All professional athletes do this because its the most effective way to boost your results.

TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music

This is the daddy of the Spark 3 range. You get the lot, including 24/7 activity and heart rate tracking, GPS, sports tracking and on-board storage for music. The only thing that is missing are the Bluetooth headphones you get with the TomTom Spark 3 Music + Headphones version.
